The Agile Robotics for Industrial Automation Competition (ARIAC) is a simulation-based robotics challenge hosted by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). The competition aims to test and assess the agility and autonomy of robotic systems within realistic industrial workcell environments. Participants develop algorithms that control robot manipulators and automated guided systems tasked with fulfilling dynamic manufacturing orders, dealing with real-world disruptions such as failing sensors, unplanned order changes, and component defects. By relying on open-source frameworks like ROS and Gazebo, ARIAC enables academic and industry researchers worldwide to benchmark industrial grasping, path planning, and autonomous decision-making without needing expensive physical hardware cells.
