BattleBots is the premier combat robotics competition, founded in 1999 and broadcast internationally, in which custom-built robots attempt to destroy or immobilize opposing machines in a sealed arena. Robots compete in the heavyweight division at 250 lbs and use a wide variety of weapons including full-body spinners, horizontal bar spinners, vertical spinning discs, flippers, and crushers. The competition has driven real innovation in motor controller technology, titanium armour, and kinetic energy storage. Multiple BattleBots champion builders have gone on to found robotics companies or work at SpaceX and Boston Dynamics. Bite Force, built by Paul Ventimiglia, won multiple championships and is considered the most decorated robot in the modern era. Tombstone, built by Ray Billings, is regarded as the most feared horizontal bar spinner in the sport.
