Cybathlon 2016

Cybathlon is a unique international championship organised by ETH Zurich in which people with physical disabilities compete using advanced assistive robot technology to complete everyday tasks. Unlike most robotics competitions, the competitor is always a human pilot wearing or operating the robotic system. Disciplines include the Powered Exoskeleton Race for paraplegics walking an obstacle course, the FES Bicycle Race using electrically stimulated cycling, the Powered Wheelchair Race, the Prosthetic Arm Race, the Prosthetic Leg Race, and the Brain-Computer Interface Race controlling a virtual avatar using thought alone. The event uses tasks drawn from daily life rather than artificial laboratory benchmarks. Cybathlon generates significant public interest because the assistive technology has direct real-world application, and the human pilot experience with the device is as important as the device technical performance.
