Formula Student Driverless is the autonomous racing category of the Formula Student competition, in which university teams design and build fully self-driving racing cars that navigate a cone-defined track without any human input. Teams must complete an autocross lap, an endurance run, and demonstrate efficiency and reliability across multiple events. The challenge demands integrated mastery of perception, planning, and control on a vehicle the team has engineered from scratch. ETH Zurich AMZ Driverless team dominated the early years, winning the inaugural 2017 edition and multiple subsequent years. TU Munich municHMotorsport and KA-RaceIng from Karlsruhe are the other consistently strong performers. Formula Student Driverless is regarded as one of the highest-quality training grounds for autonomous vehicle engineers, with many alumni joining Waymo, Mobileye, and European autonomous vehicle startups.
