The MATE ROV Competition is the world's largest underwater robotics competition, founded in 2001 and now running in more than 30 countries. Student teams design, build, and pilot Remotely Operated Vehicles to complete underwater missions modelled on real industry and scientific scenarios including deep-sea mineral survey, offshore wind turbine inspection, coral reef restoration, and search and rescue. The competition runs across multiple divisions from elementary school through to university level. Teams are evaluated on vehicle performance, technical documentation, product demonstration, and team organisation, mirroring the full engineering workflow from design to client presentation. Cornell University underwater robotics team and the University of British Columbia Subbots have been consistently competitive at the top EXPLORER division level in recent years.
