University Rover Challenge

The University Rover Challenge is the world's premier Mars rover competition for university students, organised annually by the Mars Society at the Mars Desert Research Station in Hanksville, Utah. Teams design and build rovers that must complete tasks simulating real Mars exploration: sample retrieval, equipment servicing, autonomous navigation, and extreme terrain traversal. The rovers must operate without pre-mapped routes and handle Utah's rocky desert environment, which serves as a geological and operational analogue for Martian terrain. Scores are based on task completion across four mission areas with a 50-kilogram rover weight limit. Amirkabir University of Technology and Polish universities including AGH University of Science and Technology and Warsaw University of Technology have dominated recent editions. The competition attracts over 100 teams from more than 20 countries annually.
