Root AI Robots

Root AI was a US agricultural robotics startup founded in 2018, developing AI-guided autonomous robots for greenhouse harvesting. Its Virgo platform used computer vision and machine learning to autonomously identify and harvest ripe tomatoes in commercial greenhouse environments. Root AI was acquired by AppHarvest in 2021 to automate its large-scale Kentucky greenhouse operations. AppHarvest subsequently entered bankruptcy in 2023, making Root AI's Virgo technology and commercial trajectory a significant case study in agricultural robotics commercialisation challenges.
